Back to Bone was the brainchild of Manchester-born Robin and a group of supportive friends. Based in Torrington, north Devon, the three day event first happened in 1997 with local bands providing the music and a helpful landowner providing the 45 acres needed to host the festival.
There have been teething troubles and Andrews points to licensing as the key hurdle. The police, however, are supportive of the event and any difficulties with local residents have been ironed out through negotiations and compromises from both sides. According to the organisers the event now enjoys widescale public support and the fact that Back to the Bone provides many cash-strapped local musicians with a platform to perform goes down well.
The festival's key target is to provide an opportunity for extreme music and sports fanatics with a chance to go wild in the country on the coast. There's a wide range of acts with a bias on retro hip hop alongside a mad sounding list of adrenalin-inducing activities including dry slope snow boarding, surfing and bmx-ing. Party on!
