Sunday Summary
The end of another festival era sets in
Glastonbury spirit continues to sparkle
A huge white flotilla glided from the back stage area of the Theatre field and illuminated the crowd with an eerie light. A man dressed in classical Greek robes chanted Latin over the top of a non-stop blast of floaty rhythms. Confetti showered the 1,000-strong awe struck crowd which drifted in an enchanted mass behind the spectacle. Stilt-walkers costumed in white sci-fi outfits towered over the crowd. Glastonbury 99 is coming to a reluctant end. For many the magical galleon will have epitomised Glastonbury's capacity to contiually surprise and captivate.
This year's festival came as a welcome relief to those whose faith had been tested by the previous two mudfests. A couple of bouts of rain failed to dampen spririts and helped refresh sun-addled revellers.
Despite reported rises in thefts and drug-related arrests the overidding atmosphere was of a peaceful and friendly crowd out to have the weekend of their lives.
The recent death of festival co-founder Jean Eavis was marked with a two-minute silence at 11.30am. The place Glastonbury holds in the hearts of the many thousands who have attended the festival over the years ensures that she will not be forgotten.
